The spotlight will shine on a group of Oahu teachers and educators during “My Teacher’s Got Talent” at Mid-Pacific Institute on Saturday.
Organizer Kimee Balmilero, who studied theater with the late Ronald Bright, said the idea for the show came from a recent gathering of former students of the beloved Castle High School theater teacher and director.

“When all of us ‘Bright’ kids got together, it was so inspiring to see how many of us had become teachers,” said Balmilero, 36.
Bright’s legacy will be well-represented in the show. Son Michael, a teacher at Kamehameha Schools, and wife Jade, a Bright disciple who teaches at Ahuimanu Elementary School, will appear. Many of the other participants are performing arts teachers, including Jasmine Fernandez, an arts and drama teacher at Maryknoll Schools, and Miguel Cadoy, music teacher at Farrington High School.
Another performer, Dan McLaughlin, is a special education teacher at Roosevelt High who produced his own CD (“Shadow Box”), plays guitar and writes music, according to Balmilero.
“I think a lot of teachers out there who aren’t necessarily teaching theater or dance or voice, they started off doing that kind of stuff and that’s what brought them into this profession,” she said.
Balmilero is a multitalented performer whose credits include roles on Broadway in “Mamma Mia!” and “Miss Saigon,” television shows including “Hawaii Five-0,” and improv groups such as Hollywood’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and Second City-Hollywood.
She now runs the extracurricular studies program at Mid-Pacific, where she found plenty of talent among her colleagues. She’ll be doing improv with Mid-Pac high school Principal Tom McManus, and elementary school Principal Edna Hussey will play piano. “Those are the kind of little things that I want to find,” Balmilero said. “How many kids know that their principal is an amazing pianist?”
Also on the bill: Mary Hicks, ‘Iolani Schools; Sarah Gamiao Kekuna, Mid-Pacific; Katrina Johnson, Castle High School; Allan Lau, Kaimiloa Elementary; Kristian Lei, Honolulu Broadway Babies; and Moanalua High School teachers Cris Pasquil, Kim Reincke, Melissa Shelverton and Jill Tengan.
Balmilero hopes to make “My Teacher’s Got Talent” an annual event, giving teachers regular opportunities to showcase their talents and for their students to enjoy them. She also hopes that other professions might present talent shows.
The show is a benefit for the BizGym Foundation, a nonprofit that runs events designed to give children exposure to business practices.
