Keoua Mahiko poured in 28 points and point guard Nic Tom muscled his way to 11 rebounds as No. 1 Kaiser ran away from No. 10 McKinley 69-40 on Friday night at the Cougars’ gym.
In a battle of OIA East co-leaders, Kaiser proved dominant. The Cougars improved to 8-1 in league play, while the upstart Tigers slipped to 7-2.
Mahiko, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, also grabbed six rebounds while shooting 10-for-17 from the field.
“We need to bounce back from that loss (to Roosevelt). That was heartbreaking,” Mahiko said.
Kaiser was without 6-4 swingman Chance Kalaugher (elbow injury) that night, and it wasn’t entirely different this time. Kalaugher had 16 points and six rebounds before being hit with a technical foul. By Coach Branden Kawazoe’s in-house rule, the senior had to sit the rest of the game.
“We came out strong tonight,” Kalaugher said. “Keoua steps up for us all the time.”
Kawazoe didn’t question the technical foul, but it came roughly 20 seconds after Kalaugher was undercut while leaping for a saved ball. There was no call on the play, which left Kalaugher on his back. The 225-pound defensive end/hoopster withstood the impact, then questioned a later call that went against him.
“He just kind of shrugged,” Kawazoe said. “I think overall he has improved emotionally.”
Tom was a steadying influence in a game of flurries. The senior dished out five assists. As a team, Kaiser shot 10-for-20 from 3-point range, getting 4-for-5 shooting from the arc in the first quarter.
Kalaugher banged his way to position on the low post to start the game, scoring four quick points, before splashing a couple of deep 3s as the home team opened with a 13-3 run. After a reverse layup by Kamu Scheer and the first of four treys by Mahiko, the Cougars led 20-7 after one quarter.
Then came scoring punch from the bench. Isaiah Akiona sank two 3-pointers and Jonah Chinen hit one as Kaiser expanded the lead to 34-15 just four minutes into the second quarter.
The Tigers made some noise in the second half — Dan Villejo, who returned recently from a knee injury, scored all seven of his points after the break. But they got no closer than 18 the rest of the way.
McKinley shot 3-for-16 in the opening quarter and never got untracked. Huthifah Abdel Jawad led with 15 points (three treys) and four rebounds. The Tigers finished 14-for-52 from the field, including 5-for-19 from the arc.
Kaiser dominated the glass with a 44-28 edge. The Cougars shot 23-for-56 from the field and 13-for-17 from the foul line.
“Our defense wasn’t there tonight,” Abdel Jawad said. “We need to play great defense to get our offense going, and we just couldn’t play our game. But we’ve had a good start and God has helped us. We’ve got to respond. One day, one hour, however long it takes, and just finish the regular season strong.”
