The seventh-ranked University of Hawaii water polo team split a doubleheader with No. 2 UCLA and No. 20 Wagner on Saturday at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational.
UCLA jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second quarter and maintained control in a 13-8 win, sending the Rainbow Wahine to their first loss of the season. UH freshman Femke Aan led UH with four goals and Carla Abellan scored twice in the fourth quarter.
The Rainbow Wahine bounced back to take command early against Wagner in an 8-4 win. Freshman Irene Gonzalez scored in all four quarters and Aan added two more goals to help UH improve to 3-1 entering the final day of the tournament.
UH closes the weekend against No. 8 San Jose State and CSU Bakersfield today at UCSB’s Campus Pool.
Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball edges HPU
Parker Farris scored the game-winning jumper as time expired to lead the Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball team over Hawaii Pacific 66-64 in Hilo on Saturday.
Jordan Russell scored a game-high 33 points and Vandyon Lockett posted 15 points for the Vulcans (4-10, 4-6 PacWest). Hawaii Hilo held the lead for most of the game, but the Sharks (12-5, 7-3 PacWest) rallied in the fourth quarter with five lead changes in the final five minutes. HPU’s Chauncey Orr finished with 14 points in the loss.

Cory Lange led the Seasiders (10-6, 7-4 PacWest) with 21 points and Scott Friel added 20 points.
Taj Spencer recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Lancers (16-4, 7-3 PacWest).
>> Sophomore guard Brandon Simister finished with a game-high 24 points as the Dixie State men’s basketball team fended off Chaminade in a 103-100 overtime win on Saturday at McCabe Gymnasium. Simister’s 3-pointer with two seconds left forced extra play with the game tied at 89.
Trevor Hill added 21 points for the Red Storm (9-7, 6-4 PacWest). Kiran Shastri scored a team-high 22 points for the Silverswords (7-10, 5-5 PacWest).
Cal Baptist women defeat BYU-Hawaii
Cassidy Mihalko racked up 26 points and Kamille Diaz added 21 points to lift California Baptist over the BYU-Hawaii women’s basketball team 89-74 on Saturday in Laie.
The Lancers (17-1, 9-1 PacWest) outrebounded BYU-Hawaii 47-32. Celeste Claw scored a team-high 17 points for the Seasiders (6-9, 3-7 PacWest).
>> Breanna Mackenzie recorded 23 points and eight rebounds as the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team trounced Hawaii Hilo 71-40 Saturday in Hilo.
CeCe Pearl added 14 points and five assists for the Sharks (10-7, 7-3 PacWest). Vanessa Mancera led the Vulcans with 12 points. Hawaii Hilo (4-10, 4-5 PacWest) struggled with 17 turnovers, compared to HPU’s 10.
>> The Chaminade women’s basketball team trailed by just two points in the final 32 seconds, but Dixie State converted three of four free throws to seal the 61-56 win on Saturday at McCabe Gymnasium.
Taylor Mann had a game-high 18 points and 18 rebounds for the Red Storm (4-12, 4-6 PacWest). Kristle Henry scored 13 points and Lilia Maio recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Silverswords (4-10, 4-6 PacWest).
Brown, Rossing to speak at QB Club
University of Hawaii head diving coach Mike Brown and assistant coach Anita Rossing will speak at the Honolulu Quarterback Club on Monday at Maple Garden Restaurant.
Brown and Rossing enter their 16th year coaching at UH. In 2015, the husband and wife were named co-coaches of the year after the women’s diving team clinched the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship. They will discuss the upcoming MPSF Championships in February.
Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and costs $15.
