Fatu Sua-Godinet is back.
Plagued by injuries during his football and basketball seasons, the 6-foot-2 senior guard scored seven points in the fourth quarter and delivered a pinpoint pass to Kobe Young for a go-ahead, corner 3-pointer with 38 seconds left as Kamehameha stunned ‘Iolani 43-42 on Saturday night at the Raiders’ gym.
Jayden Zarriello scored 12 points to lead Kamehameha’s balanced attack. The victory pushed Kamehameha to 4-2 in the ILH, a crucial place to be in a tight race that has Saint Louis (5-1) in first place. The Warriors have won four in a row since losing their first two league games.
“I’m so proud of them. We have 10 kids who can start for a lot of teams in this state,” Warriors coach Greg Tacon said. “Fatu is a four-year guy, been through so many injuries. Now he’s coming off the bench and feeling his way back. His sacrifices are unbelievable.”
Sua-Godinet was scoreless with two rebounds and a turnover in the first three quarters, but looked comfortable with the ball in his hands at crunch time.
“We’ve been playing together so long through the years,” Young said. “Fatu’s a veteran and he can take a good shot any time, but he set me up.”
Robby Mann scored 23 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field to spark ‘Iolani. The loss dropped the Raiders to 3-3 in league play, reducing their chances of winning the regular season — and earning an automatic state-tourney berth — significantly.
“We didn’t deserve to win that game. All these games in the ILH, you have to finish. You have to make free throws, limit turnovers and get stops. We didn’t do any of those,” Raiders coach Dean Shimamoto said. “Kamehameha played real physical on the ball, but you’ve got to expect that late in the game. Our other guys were getting to the hole, but they just couldn’t finish.”
It was a remarkable comeback by the Warriors, who managed to go oh-fer (0-for-8) from the field in the third quarter, scoring on one free throw. They trailed 33-26 entering the fourth quarter against an ‘Iolani defense led by 6-foot-8 center Hugh Hogland.
But it was Kamehameha’s tough, swarming man-to-man defense that turned the tide. They limited Hogland to three points after the first quarter. Hogland, who finished with seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks, didn’t have a field-goal attempt in the last 24 minutes. It was similar to what Kamehameha did in a win over Saint Louis last week, stifling limiting Tristan Nichols (seven points) to no points after the first quarter.
“We basically lost in a similar manner against Maryknoll (earlier in the week),” Shimamoto said. “We have to learn how to play through adversity.”
The home team outrebounded Kamehameha 30-17, but shot 1-for-7 from the field in the final quarter and committed five costly and mostly unforced turnovers. ‘Iolani finished the game 15-for-28 from the charity stripe.
It took resilience, though, for the visiting Warriors to come back. Sua-Godinet hit two free throws with 5:15 left to bring Kamehameha within 35-30, then swished a 3-pointer from the right wing. After Kaeler Kahana drilled a corner 3 to give Kamehameha a 36-35 lead, it was back and forth. In the midst of three more lead changes, Sua-Godinet scored on a layup on a pass from Zarriello.
After Mann hit two foul shots and Nick Kennedy made one free throw, ‘Iolani led 40-38 with 2:20 remaining. Zarriello sank two free throws with 2:09 left to tie the game at 40.
Mann scored on a layup to make it 42-40 with 1:34 left and the Raiders got the ball back following a Kamehameha miss.
After ‘Iolani guard Helam Baldomero drew contact on a drive, Tacon called time out. Baldomero then missed both free-throw tries with 53 seconds left, setting up the big play by Sua-Godinet and Young, who hit his only 3-pointer of the night.
“Hugh sagged in and I was in the corner,” said Young, a 6-4 forward-center.
The Raiders nearly lost the ball on a lob to Hogland near the top of the key. After Shimamoto called timeout with 14.9 seconds to go, Zach Gelacio drove right from the top and missed a difficult shot off the glass. Kennedy tried a mid-air putback and missed, and Kamehameha’s Kamren Victorino-Kato was fouled with 5.8 seconds left.
After a timeout by Shimamoto, the sophomore missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Hogland rebounded and hesitated for a couple of seconds as Kamehameha jammed the outlet targets. Finally, Hogland found guard Justin Genovia, who drove past midcourt and pulled up at the left wing for a 23-footer that missed at the buzzer.
For Tacon and his staff, it’s life without a pause button. They’ll be studying video and sending clips of their next opponent, Maryknoll, to their players very, very soon.
“You can’t celebrate anything for a second in this league,” he said.
Except maybe during the short bus ride back to Kapalama Heights.
“OK, maybe that,” Tacon said.
