One fast charger is located at Kapolei Commons on Kapolei Parkway just off the H-1 freeway at Exit 1 for Campbell Industrial Park. The charger is located near the Ruby Tuesday restaurant.
The charging station supports the standard CHAdeMO connection (used mostly by Japanese and Korean EVs such as the Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi i-MiEV and Kia Soul EV).
The Hawaii Kai location opened just before New Year’s Day at the 7-Eleven at 515 Pepeekeo St. The charger supports both the CHAdeMO and CCS connections (used by American and European EVs like the BMW i3).
HECO owns two more charging stations. One fast charger is at the Koolau Center in Kaneohe, just off Kahekili Highway across from Valley of the Temples at 47-388 Hui Iwa St. The Koolau Center charger has CHAdeMO and CCS connections.
Another charging station is located at the Dole Plantation in Wahiawa and opened in June. The Dole Plantation fast charger has both CHAdeMO and CCS connections.
A fast charging session costs $6.50 during most of the day but can be slightly more during peak electric use times and slightly less between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Information on charging and current price is available at hawaiianelectric.com/goev. Drivers can pay using a credit card or through proprietary payment systems at each fast charger, similar to the way drivers use credit cards to fill up at gas stations.
The charging stations are part of HECO’s five-year demonstration to install, own and operate up to 25 fast chargers in their service territories. The utility said additional sites are now being scouted on Oahu and other islands.
