Kuuipo Gonzales-Reyes’s putback layup with 2.1 seconds left gave Kailua a 52-50 win over Nanakuli in the opening round of the OIA girls basketball playoffs on Friday night.
Point guard Tara Takata led the Surfriders (6-5) with 22 points. The senior also had three rebounds and four assists. Delcie “Tau” Williams was a big sparkplug in the second half, scoring 12 of her 19 points. The senior forward added a team-high nine boards and also had two steals while shooting 7-for-11 from the field.
“At the Farrington (regular-season) game, (Williams) and I had a conversation about how she can’t take a back seat,” Kailua coach Mandy Llamedo said. “She had a rough night against Farrington, but tonight I’m happy to see her come through.”
Kailua, the fifth-place team from the East, advanced and will travel to meet the East’s top seed, Roosevelt, in quarterfinal-round play on Saturday night. The Kailua-Roosevelt loser will still be alive in the hunt for one of the OIA’s six Division I state-tournament berths.
The elimination game left Nanakuli (7-4), the West’s fourth-place team, longing on a night when the Golden Hawks outrebounded Kailua 43-30, but shot just 12-for-24 at the free-throw line.
“Our free throws weren’t there. We think if we made them, we would’ve won this game,” said junior guard Alana Nuuanu, who led Nanakuli with 17 points and five steals.
A jittery crowd of about 200 at Hugh Taufa‘asau Court saw the visiting Surfriders surge to a 9-2 lead. Nanakuli’s troubles from the field (6-for-33 in the first half) and the foul line (1-for-6 in the second quarter) diminished a strong effort on the boards.
Kailua led 24-15 at halftime despite committing 11 turnovers. Nanakuli went on a 10-0 third-quarter run; Kanani Diamond’s follow shot pushed the Golden Hawks ahead 30-28.
With guards Jahnna Kahele (14 points) and Nuuanu igniting the rally, the Golden Hawks stayed close. The lead changed hands four more times as the pace increased. A spin move in the paint on a fast-break layup by Nuuanu gave Nanakuli a 45-44 lead with less then four minutes remaining.
Williams, however, shot 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final quarter. Nyla Salas-Baker made one of two foul shots with 41.7 seconds to go, giving Kailua a 50-49 lead.
Kahele hit one of two free throws with 18.2 seconds left to tie it at 50.
Salas-Baker then missed a 3-point try and Gonzales-Reyes muscled her way in a scrum to pick up the loose rebound and bank it off the glass for the go-ahead layup.
After a timeout, the Golden Hawks inbounded close to midcourt, but got trapped and were unable to get a final shot attempt off.
