Men’s top seed Kyle Edmund and women’s top seed Christina McHale advanced to the semifinals of the SportMaster Tennis Championships of Maui at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on Friday.
Edmund, who hails from Germany, swept American qualifier Nicholas Meister 6-2, 6-3 in quarterfinal action. McHale, of America, breezed past the No. 6 seed, Poland’s Paula Kania, 6-1, 6-2.
McHale will take on Germany’s Naomi Broady, the No. 3 seed, today at 10 a.m. Edmund awaits the winner of James Duckworth and Frances Tiafoe.
In other semifinal action, Di Wu of China will square off against American Noah Rubin on the men’s side, while Jessica Pegula takes on fellow American Raveena Kinglsey, who upset No. 2 seed Samantha Crawford in the quarterfinals.
Hawaii surfers advance at Volcom Pipe Pro
Kauai native Koa Smith posted a 9.0 and a 9.67, the two highest scores of the day, at the Volcom Pipe Pro on the North shore Friday.
The 21-year-old bested Honolulu native Noa Mizuno and North Shore native Kiron Jabour, as well as Japan’s Kaito Ohashi to win his heat.
18-year-old Imaikalani deVault of Maui also adavanced with a heat total of 6.90.
