Tianna Hanohano scored on a layup with 15 seconds to play, giving Leilehua a 32-31 overtime win over Roosevelt for the OIA Division I girls basketball championship.
Hanohano was a huge factor. The 6-foot guard ran the point for Leilehua (12-2) and was a ball hawk defensively in the paint. Center Tywanna Abbott led the taller Mules with 10 points and seven rebounds. Chyel Palmer had six points and six boards before fouling out, and Hanohano finished with seven points, five caroms and two assists in a hugely versatile and valuable performance. The length and height of the Mules helped limit Roosevelt’s outstanding scorer, Keala Quinlan, to nine points on 4-for-13 shooting.
“Keala’s a great player. Hat’s off to her,” Hanohano said. “She left her heart out there.”
Roosevelt (12-1) won a preseason matchup with Leilehua 50-38, but it was a different tale on Saturday night.
Leilehua trailed 31-30 after Quinlan drilled a clutch pull-up 3-point shot on the fast break with 51 seconds left in overtime. Mules coach Elroy Dumlao called time out with 19.8 seconds left, setting up an inbounds pass from Hanohano to Abbott at the elbow.
“It’s a play we didn’t run earlier and it depends on the screen,” Hanohano said.
After the ball got to Abbott, Hanohano sprinted right at her teammate and took a handoff as she dribbled left. Abbott screened Hanohano’s defender, and the left-hander went to the rim for a layup off the glass.
Down 32-31, Roosevelt immediately pushed the ball upcourt and guard Ashley Kiko drew contact near the baseline with 8.5 seconds left. She missed the first free-throw try, and after a Roosevelt timeout, she missed the second.
Hanohano rebounded and was fouled, but it was only the sixth team foul for Roosevelt. They gave out their seventh foul when Abbott took an inbounds pass with 4.8 seconds left.
Abbott missed her 1-and-1, and after a scramble for the loose ball, Roosevelt gained possession in the corner with 0.7 seconds to go. Kiko inbounded to Quinlan racing up the sideline, and Quinlan was able to get one dribble down before launching a halfcourt shot that missed off the back iron at the buzzer.
Leilehua’s faithful following of about 200 loud and hearty fans erupted in glee.
“I told the team before the game, ‘You’re going to make history as the first team to not be in the Top 10 to win the OIA,’ ” Dumlao said.
Roosevelt (12-3) led for most of the second half, but was unable to pull away. The defending league champions had a 28-25 lead with 4:49 left in regulation, but were in delay mode the rest of the time and didn’t score again until the extra period.
It was Shaylee Todani’s 3-point shot from the right wing with 24 seconds to go in regulation that tied the game. The Rough Riders weren’t able to get a clean look before the buzzer.
“He was looking for me to shoot it,” Todani said of her coach. “He has faith in me and so does my team.”
Roosevelt had already clinched a berth in the state tournament.
“Hat’s off to Elroy and his team. They got the better of us,” Roosevelt coach Hinano Higa said. “We’ve got to get back to work and clean up.”
