Stefan Jankovic had other things on his mind when asked Monday about his freshly minted status as Big West Player of the Week.
“The award means nothing. I’m looking ahead to the Irvine game on Thursday to finally take over the No. 1 spot,” the big man said in a message.

Well, then.
Indeed, UH (18-3, 7-1 Big West), coming off a second straight perfect Big West road trip, is preparing for a showdown with co-leader UC Irvine (18-6, 7-1) at the Stan Sheriff Center. And it’s true that conference weekly honors have been commonplace for UH this season; four of the 13 awarded this season have gone the way of the Rainbow Warriors.
Jankovic is the third UH player to receive it, along with guards Roderick Bobbitt and Isaac Fleming. Bobbitt was honored twice.
Jankovic, a 6-foot-11 junior, leads the team in scoring (15.3) and rebounding (6.6).
He stepped up in wins at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly last week, averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 boards in the two games along the Central California coast. He shot 58 percent across the 76-64 victory at UCSB and 75-60 decision at Cal Poly, helping UH start 4-0 in conference road games for the first time in program history.
“Janks has been very consistent from Day 1 and has taken a jump in conference play,” UH coach Eran Ganot said. “He’s made big plays for us all year and it’s been great to see his continued development. He has put in a lot of work. Again, individual awards are a direct result of team success and I’m sure Janks will say that as well.”
The last time three different UH players earned BWC Player of the Week in a season was 2013-14 (Christian Standhardinger, Keith Shamburger, Brandon Spearman). No UH players received it last season.
UH took Monday off from practice to recover from its road trip. Fleming, who missed the trip with a sprained ankle, is considered questionable for the Irvine game, which is scheduled for 8 p.m., following the UH women’s game at 5:30 p.m.
