City officials say a “no tolerance” parking ban will be in place along all streets and road shoulders in Lanikai this Presidents Day weekend.
A “special enforcement district” will prohibit parking on shoulders of public roads and streets within the “Lanikai loop” between
10 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily on Saturday, Sunday and Monday as part of a pilot project. The loop includes the one-way streets Aalapapa Drive and Mokulua Drive, where bike lanes run along the right side of both streets.
The action was triggered by public safety concerns tied to major congestion that occurs commonly in Lanikai on weekends and holidays. Residents have reported delays of up to two hours in getting in and out of their properties on some busy weekends, city officials said. The plan has the support of the city Department of Transportation Services, the Honolulu Police Department, the Lanikai Association and area Councilman Ikaika Anderson.
During previous holiday weekends, DTS erected a barricade on the bike lane side of the streets, physically blocking parking, but people could still park along one side, city spokesman Jesse Broder Van Dyke said. This weekend, those parking along either side will be cited, he said.
“The grassy areas are ‘unimproved sidewalks’ where parking is technically illegal but (has been) generally tolerated,” Broder Van Dyke said. “We are giving notice that it will not be tolerated.”
People wishing to access Lanikai Beach or the Lanikai Pillboxes Trail from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the three-day weekend may walk, bike, take TheBus Route 70 or be dropped off in Lanikai, city officials said.
Those who ordinarily park along Lanikai’s public streets or shoulders after
10 a.m. are advised to remove their vehicles before then.
