    Waimea Bay Beach Park was packed Wednesday morning as thousands flocked to the North Shore hoping to watch The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big-wave surfing contest. Traffic on Kamehameha Highway was heavy most of the day.

    The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big-wave surfing contest was called off Wednesday because the timing of the expected swell changed, meaning waves wouldn’t meet contest standards until much later in the day — too late to hold the event. Chase Connell, left, Savannah Pinegar and Katya Herrod sat on a sofa couch that was left on the side of Kamehameha Highway just above Waimea Bay.

Thousands of spectators gathered at Waimea Bay early Wednesday for “The Eddie,” but the monster waves that were expected didn’t arrive on time — prompting organizers to cancel the competition’s highly anticipated run. Read more
