Waimea Bay Beach Park was packed Wednesday morning as thousands flocked to the North Shore hoping to watch The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big-wave surfing contest. Traffic on Kamehameha Highway was heavy most of the day.

The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big-wave surfing contest was called off Wednesday because the timing of the expected swell changed, meaning waves wouldn’t meet contest standards until much later in the day — too late to hold the event. Chase Connell, left, Savannah Pinegar and Katya Herrod sat on a sofa couch that was left on the side of Kamehameha Highway just above Waimea Bay.
