The University of Hawaii at Hilo got a total of 28 hits in a pair of wins over Cal State San Bernardino. The scores were 6-2 and 12-11 in San Bernardino, Calif.
In the first game, the Vulcans (4-3) used a four-run sixth inning to take control of the game, which saw Billi Derlerth pick up her first career collegiate win with a complete game five-hitter.
The Vulcans jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the fifth inning of the second game, but the Coyotes (5-4) rallied back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, and another in the sixth. The Vulcans expanded their lead to 12-8 in the final inning, but had to hold off the Coyotes’ three-run rally to emerge with the win.
UH Hilo will now head to St. George, Utah, to take part in the Dixie State Tournament from Feb. 12-14.
Hawaii Pacific victorious in season opener
Rico Garcia allowed just five hits and one run over eight innings of work, as Hawaii Pacific defeated St. Leo University 6-1 at Hans L’Orange Park.
Garcia had a shutout intact through seven innings of work before allowing a run in the eighth with two outs. He finished with five strikeouts.
Tanner Tokunaga went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Sharks (1-0). Jordan Pendleton took the loss after giving up three runs in 4.1 innings.
The Sharks and Lions (3-1) will face off again on Friday in the second game of the five game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
