We recently sold our big, bulky furniture while downsizing to smaller digs. Then came sticker shock when shopping to furnish our new place. We were shocked again — in a good way — when we dropped by the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Iwilei after seeing the furniture in the window on countless drive-bys. There we found classic rattan sets, Italian leather sofas, a mother-of-pearl inlaid dining table, glass etageres, pianos and more — even koa — at bargain prices and all incredibly clean. The nonprofit, which provides job training and other programs, refinishes and sanitizes items before putting them on the sales floor. Over the course of several visits, we picked up a sofa bed, solid-wood dining table, TV stand, queen-size bed, wool area rug, ottoman and funky, hand-painted hall table, all for less than the price of a brand-new sofa.
Now we’re obsessed and are down there almost every Tuesday (25 percent senior and military discount!) to see what’s come in. The thrift shop at 322 Sumner St. is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday; call 522-8460. — Christie Wilson
Kit and Ace combines comfort with style
If you’re a fan of Lululemon workout wear, then check out Kit and Ace’s comfortable and durable “athleisure” styles at the brand’s Ala Moana Center store, Mall Level 2, Macy’s wing. One of my favorite pieces is the York pant ($148). The high-waisted, cuffed trouser is perfect for my body shape and imparts a professional look. It is made of a light, breathable viscose blend that is perfect for Hawaii’s humid weather — and machine washable. Check out the styles at kitandace.com. — Jermel-Lynn Quillopo, Honolulu
Rattles can help soothe teething babies
When it comes to our babies, all-natural is in and plastic is out. Designed by Linda Hsiao, the smooth, simple design of Knotwork LA’s all-natural wooden rattles is perfect for teething infants. But at $80 a pop, they are more for those born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Choose from round and carabiner shapes in oak, cherry or walnut wood at Aloha Superette, 438 Uluniu St. in Kailua. Stylist transforms hair into dream locks
There’s a touch of a fairy godmother in Peggy Thompson, the platinum-haired stylist in vintage Chanel whose bright, cheery Peggy’s Salon is in its 21st year. The enchantment begins with the welcoming dance of Coco, her fluffy white Maltese, as you are served a cup of tea. Then Thompson carefully studies and listens to you before — presto! — whipping up your dream look as you enjoy the seaside park view at the salon, 2863 Kalakaua Ave. No. 4, adjoining the Kaimana Beach Hotel. My version of a dream look is emerging looking like my natural self, only better. Haircuts are $40; blow-dry and styling, $30; highlights from $55. Call 924-0422. — Mindy Pennybacker
