A cane fire in Paia came within 50 yards of Paia Gym and area homes Sunday before it was extinguished by Maui firefighters.
The fire was first reported at 12:16 a.m. in the cane field mauka of the gym.
The fire burned an area of about 1 acre before it was brought under control by 12:31 a.m. and fully extinguished by 12:40 a.m.
The cause of the fire was undetermined.
Also, Maui firefighters extinguished a brush fire near the bottom of Hahana Road in Haiku that may have originated in piles of household trash dumped in the area.
The fire, which was reported at 9:55 a.m. Sunday, burned a 20-by-200-foot area near the “Jaws” surf break.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 10:39 a.m. and had it fully extinguished by 11:39 a.m.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
Brush fires draw police scrutiny
The Hawaii Police Department is investigating brush fires that temporarily closed two major highways.
Firefighters responded to multiple suspicious fires Thursday in North Kona and South Kohala. The fires burned more than 1,000 acres, according to West Hawaii Today.
Highway 190 and an intersection on Daniel K. Inouye Highway were closed Thursday and reopened Friday afternoon as firefighters continued to fight the fires.
No injuries were reported and no homes were threatened. Initial reports indicated the fires were started in five different locations.
