Kaimuki Community Park’s recreation center, which has sustained water damage over the years, is slated to undergo rehabilitation that involves re-roofing and interior ceiling improvements, the city said in a news release.
A private contractor began prepping the facility at 3521 Waialae Ave. this week for the project.
The recreation center will remain open, with staff continuing to work out of their offices on the ground level. Recreation programs will continue, with some being relocated to the gymnasium for the project’s duration.
The upper parking lot and the basketball and volleyball courts will not be available.
The project is anticipated to wrap up this summer.
Fire scorches Maui building
An electrical fault is blamed for a fire that caused $7,500 worth of damage to the second floor of a building at a Lahaina gas station.
The fire was reported just after 3 p.m. Wednesday at a gas station at Kapunakea Street and Honoapiilani Highway.
Responding to the alarm, Lahaina firefighters saw smoke coming from a window on the building’s second floor. Crews found a smoldering fire in the walls near an exhaust vent in the stairway. Firefighters opened up the wall and extinguished burning insulation at 4 p.m.
An employee had reported smelling smoke and searched for the source for 30 minutes. Just before the employee left work, he discovered flames coming from an exhaust fan in the stairway. He extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher, shut off power and called 911.
Investigators ruled the fire accidental, saying the cause was due to an electrical fault. No injuries were reported.
Police look at body cameras
The Maui Police Department is considering outfitting officers with body-worn cameras.
The Maui News reported Thursday that the department has requested proposals from vendors for a technology system. Vendors have until March 25 to submit proposals for testing the cameras.
Assistant Chief John Jakubczak says the request doesn’t mean the department will begin using cameras, but instead is an indication that it is seriously considering its options.
