WAILUKU >> The mother of a hearing-impaired girl is again suing over education services.
Coty Luke says daughter Taysia-Lee Alexander is being denied summer services as well as programs after school, the Maui News reported.
Luke had settled a lawsuit against the Education Department last year, warning that she would sue again if the proper services were not provided.
Department of Education spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said in an email that the agency is confident it is providing appropriate services.
Luke said a schedule set by the Education Department splits her daughter’s time between preschool and kindergarten. She says that shouldn’t make Alexander ineligible for after-school programs.
“There’s nothing in the law that says she has to be in kindergarten full time in order to be in the after-school program,” said Luke, who filed suit Feb. 7.
Stranded pair saved in valley
A couple from Seattle was rescued at Nualolo Valley on the Na Pali Coast, where they were stranded due to high surf, Kauai County reported.
The case began with the report of a kayak adrift about 3:18 p.m. Friday.
After scanning the ocean, the rescue crew aboard Air-1 turned its attention to the beach at Nualolo, where they saw a man and a woman waving for help. Air-1 then headed to the landing zone near the couple.
The couple told the rescuers they were stranded in Nualolo for a few days due to the extreme surf. The visitors said that when they attempted to leave Friday, they lost their kayak in the large waves, along with their belongings.
The visitors were flown to the landing zone at Kee Beach and released at the scene.
