The National Weather Service issued a high-surf warning Monday for north and west shores from Kauai to Maui in advance of an amassing swell that could generate surf of up to 40 feet in affected areas.
The warning is in effect through 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Surf along the north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui and the north and west shores of Kauai is expected to reach 30 to 40 feet today.
Victim found underwater is identified
A 30-year-old man who died in the ocean off Ninini Beach on Kauai has been identified as Irwin Cadiz of Kapaa.
At about 5 p.m. Saturday the Fire Department helicopter crew responded to a police dispatch from a fisherman about a male swimmer in distress off Ninini, also known as Running Waters, according to fire officials.
The rescue crew found Cadiz unresponsive underwater in a cave and brought him to shore.
Firefighters performed CPR until medics arrived. He was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy will be conducted this week.
This is the third drowning on Kauai this year, compared with none at the same time last year.
Theft of grass gets Maui man 60 days in jail
WAILUKU >> A Maui County man charged in connection with the theft of more than 4,000 square feet of grass has been sentenced to 60 days in jail.
The Maui News reported Friday that 33-year-old Janden Jarnesky of Waiehu was sentenced after pleading no contest to theft. He was also ordered to serve five years of probation and pay nearly $7,700 in restitution.
Police said about $8,600 worth of grass was stolen from a Puunene sod farm on seven occasions between 2011 and 2012. The grass was found in Jarnesky’s yard.
The judge said Jarnesky initially told police he bought the grass from an unidentified third party. He later changed his story, saying he knew the grass was stolen.
