The public-school team will be coached by Leilehua’s Elroy Dumlao. The private-school team will be coached by Maryknoll’s Chico Furtado.
Last year’s doubleheader featured a highly competitive girls game, but the boys matchup between private- and public-school teams was as soft as an NBA All-Star Game. It was barely watchable, as fan reaction went.
Organizer Geremy Robinson promises a higher intensity level this time.
“I’ve talked to the coaches on both sides,” he texted.
Doors at Radford open at 3:15 p.m. The girls game will be followed by 3-point challenges, a slam dunk contest and the boys game and awards ceremony. Admission is $10, with free admission for children under 5.
This year’s girls battle at Radford, featuring two-time Star-Advertiser All-State player of the year Chanelle Molina of Konawaena, promises to be better than the first two years. Molina is joined on the Public School squad by teammate Ihi Victor and Roosevelt’s Keala Quinlan. All three were returning All-State selections.
The Private School girls team is led by Punahou’s twin towers, Tyra Moe and Va‘e Malufau, as well as Maryknoll’s ace guard, Alexis Delovio and two huge additions from Maui — Lahainaluna’s Cameron Fernandez and Keleah-Aiko Koloi. Fernandez, like Molina, will suit up for Washington State next season.
The coaches are Maryknoll’s Chico Furtado (Private School) and Leilehua’s Elroy Dumlao (Public School).
The boys’ rosters, released over the weekend, feature Kaiser’s Chance Kalaugher and Keoua Mahiko on the Public School roster. Joseph Gouty of Leilehua is a returning All-State pick, and Kekai Smith of Kalaheo is another standout in the mix. The frontcourt is led by Kahuku’s Hirkley Latu and Leilehua’s Koa Kauhi.
The Private School boys lineup is equally promising, with standout post scorer Tristan Nichols of Saint Louis and dynamic wing scorer Robby Mann of ‘Iolani. Also joining the lineup from the state-champion ‘Iolani roster is guard Zach Gelacio, along with Kamehameha’s leading scorer, Kaeler Kahana.
The boys coaches are Kaiser’s Branden Kawazoe (Public School) and Saint Louis’ Allan Silva (Private School).
The rosters have some names that fans haven’t been accustomed to hearing, which is why Robinson calls it a “senior classic” rather than an all-star game. One example is Jordan Passas, a guard who played at Kaiser before leaving the team in December.
“She is a special-condition choice due to our Senior Classic staff knowing her talents, and the unfortunate situation and predicament she endured,” Robinson wrote, referring to a situation that had Kaiser coach Simon Bitanga suspended until the final few weeks of the season.
Bitanga was cleared by the DOE and guided the Cougars to the semifinal round of the state tournament, but declined to comment. Kaiser’s most productive scorer, Roselynn Shimaoka, was omitted from the Robinson Senior Classic girls rosters.
