The University of Hawaii has tendered a bid to host a first-round game in the National Invitation Tournament, officials said.
“(It) went in today,” athletic director David Matlin confirmed in a text to the Star-Advertiser.
UH assured itself of at least an NIT bid with its victory over UC Davis Thursday night by virtue of securing a piece of first-place in the Big West Conference men’s basketball regular season.
The Rainbow Warriors are 24-4 (13-2 in conference) and conclude the regular season Saturday at Long Beach State, where they can win the title outright.
The conference regular season winner is assured of an NIT bid if it does not qualify for the more-prestigious NCAA Tournament.
The Big West’s guaranteed NCAA Tournament bid goes to the winner of the conference tournament March 10-12 in Anaheim, Calif.
UH last appeared in the NIT, which is owned by the NCAA, in 2003-‘04. Its most recent NCAA Tournament appearance was 2001-‘02.
