Members of the Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club went far beyond their shared love of Hallmark ornaments to create an original song and hula that helped them secure a winning spot in a national contest sponsored by the greeting-card and gift company.
As one of 16 winners of the 2016 In-Store Signing Events Local Club Challenge, the Hawaii collectors will get to meet Hallmark “master keepsake artist” Ken Crow at a signing session this summer at Amy’s Hallmark at Ala Moana Center, the club’s sponsoring retailer.
“Winning means that for the first time ever in the history of the state of Hawaii, we’ll get to have a Hallmark artist signing right here at home,” said Bal Patterson, Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club president. “Most of us have always wanted to attend an artist signing but couldn’t justify the cost of flying to the mainland just to attend one.”
Another perk of being a contest winner is that a 2016 Keepsake ornament, “Santa’s Workbench,” will be available exclusively at the Hallmark stores that sponsor each of the 16 winning clubs.
The Hawaii club has
54 members, ranging in age from 36 to 72. Patterson began collecting in the early ’80s and has amassed more than 400 ornaments.
The video, shot at Amy’s Hallmark, was not a contest requirement, but club members decided it would be an effective way to get the judges’ attention and demonstrate why their group is unique and deserved to host an in-store signing event. The video also was meant to show how they made a difference in their community by donating toys to Ronald McDonald House Hawaii.
Patterson, a 56-year-old Honolulu resident, came up with the majority of the lyrics for the “Hallmark Keepsake Hula,” with the help of her daughter, Aja Kop, 36. In one segment, club members are seen dancing near a miniature castle from Disney’s “Frozen” surrounded by nearly $1,000 worth of new “Frozen” toys destined for the local charity that helps families with ill children.
“It was great to be able to have our video show one of the ways our club was working to make a difference in our community,” she said. “We wanted to make sure the song was playful, fun and filled with local-style personality — just like our club.”
