The No. 3 Hawaii beach volleyball team concluded its season-opening road trip with a victory over No. 4 Long Beach State on Sunday, finishing the Pepperdine Kickoff Tournament 1-3 at Zuma Beach, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine dropped a 4-1 decision to the host Waves earlier Sunday, the lone victory coming at No. 2 where All-American Katie Spieler paired with Emily Maglio for the first time. Spieler-Maglio swept Kaity Bailey-Delaney Knudsen, 21-19, 21-16.
The successful pair then moved up to play at No. 1 against the 49ers, earning another sweep when defeating Rachel Nieto/Kobi Pekich, 21-18, 21-13. Hawaii’s lone loss came at No. 5 as Tai Manu-Olevao and Hi’ilawe Huddleston couldn’t hold off Morea Wagner-Megan Kruiohof, 18-21, 21-18, 17-15
On Saturday, the SandBows lost to defending national champion and top-ranked USC, 4-1. Hawaii then lost to No. 6 UCLA, 3-2, the deciding point coming at No. 5 where Laurel Weaver-Julie Consani rallied for a 29-31, 25-23, 15-9 win over Hannah Rooks-Ka’iwi Schucht (UH).
No. 2 Pepperdine won its own event, going 4-0. The Waves blanked Long Beach State and UCLA 5-0, and edged USC 3-2.
Hawaii opens its home season Saturday at Queen’s Beach with duals against Hawaii Pacific at 9 a.m. and TCU at noon. The SandBows host USC on March 15 at the Ching Complex courts at 4 p.m.
Hawaii Pacific softball wins 2
The Hawaii Pacific Softball team defeated Holy Names University (Calif.) by scores of 10-4 and 6-2 on Sunday to sweep the four-game PacWest series at Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe.
In game 1, the Sharks scored all 10 runs in the first four innings, highlighted by Britney Stevens’ 2-run single in the first inning.
Game 2 saw the Sharks (7-9 overall, 4-2 PacificWest Conference) put up 6 unanswered runs after going down 2-0 to start the game. Dominique Walker hit her first homerun of the year, a 2-run shot in the 6th inning as the Sharks won all 4 games against the Hawks (4-16-1, 0-8).
Hawaii Pacific returns to action on Tuesday for a PacWest Conference doubleheader at home against Dominican beginning at 1 p.m.
