If being locked in a small enclosed space with seven of your closest friends sounds like a good time, a new attraction in King’s Village has multiple scenarios, with even more in the works.
At Breakout Waikiki, groups of two to eight people are led into one of three themed rooms, where a variety of puzzles and other challenges await. After playing an introductory video for the group, a television displays a countdown and participants must figure out the code that unlocks the door.
The rooms at Breakout Waikiki contain clues that teams must decipher and analyze in order to achieve their ultimate goal: escape.
Escape-themed attractions such as Breakout Waikiki are gaining popularity locally and on the mainland. Room With a Clue on Nimitz Highway offers a single room scenario, “The Secret Agent Room,” with two more — “The Museum Robbery” and “Lost in Paradise” — on the way. And in Kapolei, iTrampoline Hawaii is developing an escape room of its own.
Breakout Waikiki manager MacGregor Greenlee said that since his business opened in mid-November, the majority of customers have been local residents, although more tourists are discovering the business online.
“There’s no other situation I’ve found myself in where I’m facing down 10, 12 different locks and the challenge is to get them all opened,” he said. “Being able to go into a room with six or seven other people and let your mind roam, it’s such a great time.”
Each room at Breakout Waikiki — “Room 13,” “Mission Manoa” and “The Hatch” — is decorated differently, all with different hidden twists. The rooms are loosely based on those developed for a sister location in Kansas City, Mo. (The Breakout brand also operates an escape room attraction in Lawrence, Kan.) Greenlee is currently putting the finishing touches on a new room, “The Ala Moana Stock Exchange,” and said plans are in the works to open a second location in Waikiki later this year that will feature another six to eight rooms to escape.
“The creativity of our puzzles brings a new element to it. You’re not just looking for numbers. There are these disparate pieces that need to be put together,” Greenlee said. “At some point, we want you scratching your head in the room, because stumping you makes the breakout so much sweeter.
“But whatever your skill set is, there’s a role for you. The best teams are like a Swiss Army knife, where everyone has their own strengths they bring to the game.”
