For decades this newspaper — like most across the country — has served up its food coverage the same way: on Wednesdays, in pages attached to the lifestyle section.
For the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that changes April 6 with the launch of Crave, a weekly magazine dedicated to cooking, eating and drinking, overseen by managing editor Betty Shimabukuro.
Crave will still publish on Wednesdays, but the new format will give us much more space to explore and explain. All of our current columns will continue — “The Weekly Eater,” “By Request,” “Electric Kitchen,” “The Little Foodie,” “Back in the Day” and more — joined by these new features:
>> “Does It Work?” examines kitchen gadgets to gauge whether they’re worth the money and the cabinet space.
>> Mighty eater Craig Gima tastes his way through foods others might find frightening in “Should I Eat It?”
>> Food editor Joleen Oshiro breaks down basic cooking techniques in “If I Can, You Can,” a monthly step-by-step.
>> Former business writer Erika Engle reformats her column, “TheBuzz,” to cover the local restaurant scene.
And more: Look for regular features on takeout eating, cookbooks and cocktails.
Oh yes, cocktails. Our coverage of spirited beverages expands as well. Columnists Chuck Furuya (wine) and Tim Golden (beer) will be joined by Chandra Lucariello (see her cocktail piece above) on a monthly basis.
