HPU softball splits with Dominican

Dominique Walker batted 2-for-3 with three RBIs and the Hawaii Pacific softball team had a seven-run fifth inning in an 8-4 victory over Dominican to split a doubleheader Tuesday at Howard A. Okita Field.

Britney Stevens and Walker both had two-run singles during the Sharks’ fifth.

HPU’s Alexis Morales pitched a complete game and three of the runs against her were unearned.

In the first game, Dahlen Dennis batted 3-for-3 and Shannon Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the Penguins’ 6-3 win.

Walker had a pinch-hit, three-run double for the Sharks.

HPU moved to 8-10, 5-3 PacWest, while Dominican went to 7-14, 5-5.

Hilo beats Azusa Pacific in baseball

David Moody allowed one run in 61⁄3 innings of relief and Edison Sakata and Jacob Grijalva each had two RBIs as the Hawaii Hilo baseball team beat Azusa Pacific 7-5 on Tuesday at Francis Wong Stadium.

Phillip Steering and Nate Green each scored two runs for the Vulcans (3-7, 2-6 PacWest).

Cam Bennett had three RBIs for the Cougars (7-10, 3-1).

In the first game, the Sharks scored all their runs in the first inning of an 8-5 victory.

HPU sent 12 batters to the plate and had eight hits in the inning. William Leskovec had a two-run single during the rally.

In the second game, Ryan Garcia hit a grand slam and Matt Jervis had four hits in Point Loma’s 11-6 victory in seven innings.

The Sharks’ Steven Camberos homered twice and had four RBIs.

The Sharks moved to 13-5, 5-3, while the Sea Lions dropped to 13-5, 2-2.

HPU pair claims PacWest tennis honors

Hawaii Pacific’s Thibaud Berland and Nicole Hoynaski were named PacWest Tennis Players of the Week.

Berland, a senior from Lusignan, France, won singles matches against Point Loma and Azusa Pacific during the Sharks’ road trip to Southern California. He also won when an opponent dropped out due to injury and another match was abandoned.

Berland also teamed with Alexander Meyer to win four doubles matches.

Hoynaski, a junior from Sydney, Australia, went 5-1 in singles and 6-0 in doubles during the HPU women’s road trip.
