Yes, it was a big turnout for the Republican presidential caucus on Tuesday: roughly 15,000, or about a 50 percent increase over what it was four years ago. What’s still being counted, however, is the number that were new GOP voters.
Kimo Sutton, a leader of the Hawaii campaign for Donald Trump, who won the lion’s share of delegates in the vote, acknowledged that at least some of the voters may have beeen Democrats, who later might vote in the Democratic Party caucus on March 26.
By the same token, we wonder how many GOP voters might turn up in Dem country for that event — or even how many of the Democrats who voted GOP cross back. We’ll probably never know.
Does this mean Waianae will be voting for Caldwell?
It’s been a common complaint that the Waianae Coast communities get little attention from Downtown Honolulu politicians, except maybe during election years.
Well, this is an election year. But never mind. The city’s announcement that it will repave 113 lane miles in the area by summer’s end counts as good news for long-suffering area motorists. So, too, are the state’s plans to add a contra flow lane in Nanakuli, where traffic can be horrendous.
