If Oliver Jaskie is really Michigan’s No. 4 starter, it doesn’t bode well for Hawaii the next three games.
Moved up in the rotation to pitch for the first time in 11 days, Jaskie combined with four relievers to shut out the Rainbow Warriors 6-0 on Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
Drew Lugbauer hit a two-run double in a four-run sixth inning and Jaskie extended his streak to 162⁄3 innings without allowing an earned run for the 19th-ranked Wolverines (8-3).
Michigan entered the series fifth in the country with a 1.59 ERA and notched his fourth shutout.
“When he’s on, we’re on, because he does a good job of locating down in the zone and utilizing the changeup and breaking balls,” Michigan coach Erik Bakich said. “It was very much a game throughout the early part and middle of the game. The nonscoring early on was a credit to the two pitchers.”
A crowd of 1,085 watched Hawaii starter Brendan Hornung (2-3) match Jaskie (3-0) for five innings.
Neither team scored until Hornung fatigued in the sixth inning, allowing four of Michigan’s five hits in the frame.
Cody Bruder put Michigan on the board with an infield single to shortstop that brought in Matt Ramsay, who led off with a base hit.
Lugbauer followed with a two-run double inside the bag at first to make it 3-0 against Hornung, who had gone 122⁄3 innings without allowing a run before Bruder’s hit.
Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso tried to let Hornung get out of the inning on his own, but Michael Brdar singled home Lugbauer with two outs to make it 4-0.
“He hit a wall in that long inning and he just couldn’t come through it,” Trapasso said. “Once he hit that 90-pitch mark he really struggled, but we got him over 100 and that will benefit him as we keep going.”
Jaskie, a sophomore left-hander, left after walking two with one out in the sixth. The normal Sunday starter for UM allowed three hits and three walks.
Four relievers held Hawaii without a hit over the final 32⁄3 innings. William Tribucher struck out the side in the seventh and Grant Reuss, making his first collegiate appearance, worked a perfect ninth.
“It’s the first game all season that I’ve been really disappointed with how we played,” Trapasso said. “The one thing this group has is great energy and great toughness and we didn’t have it tonight.”
Michigan increased its lead to 6-0 when pinch hitter Jonathan Engelmann singled home two runs with two outs in the seventh inning on a ball that never left the infield.
Engelmann hit a slow roller to second base, where Josh Rojas was playing deep. Rojas fielded the ball cleanly and ran for second but didn’t have a play.
Carmen Benedetti never stopped running after reaching third base, but Rojas took long enough and his throw was wide of the plate to allow Benedetti to score.
Two of Hawaii’s three hits went for extra bases, but the ’Bows failed to convert on those hits.
Rojas led off the bottom of the third inning with a triple that got past the diving attempt of Bruder in center.
The first runner to reach scoring position in the game stayed there the rest of the inning. Kekai Rios’ fly ball to left wasn’t deep enough for Rojas to tag and Jaskie got a big strikeout of Matt LoCoco before Jacob Sheldon-Collins grounded out to end the inning.
Hawaii got its second extra-base hit of the game in the fifth inning when Alan Baldwin roped a double to the wall in right field, but he was thrown out trying for third on a relay throw from Ako Thomas.
Rojas was replaced by freshman Ethan Lopez at second base to start the eighth inning and Marcus Doi came in for Baldwin in left in the ninth.
Doi had missed the last seven games with an ankle injury.
“We’ll take a look at who is pitching (today) and go from there,” Trapasso said.
