Maui police have charged a 33-year-old man with attempted murder after he allegedly tried to hit police officers, his girlfriend and her 13-year-old daughter with his vehicle.
The incident occurred at Haycraft Park in Maalaea on Tuesday, police said.
According to police, Justin Shepherd, who does not have a local address, was still in his vehicle when responding officers arrived at the park. They said after noticing the officers, Shepherd crashed his vehicle into the police vehicle, causing damage.
Shepherd was subdued and arrested at the scene. No injuries were reported.
On Wednesday, police charged Shepherd with three counts of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree criminal property damage, first-degree terroristic threatening, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, reckless driving and driving without a valid driver’s license. His bail was set at $1 million.

Maui Fire Department personnel performing mop-up operations at the site of a brush fire in Olowalu on Friday discovered an unidentified body lying beside a burned-out truck.
The cause of death is pending the result of an autopsy, according to fire officials.
The cause of the brush fire has not been determined.
Police have opened an investigation into the case.
