Sarah Captain had three hits and scored two runs, helping the Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team beat Dominican (Calif.) 8-2 in the second game and earn a doubleheader split on Friday afternoon in Laie.
In the opener, the Penguins topped the Seasiders 4-3 in 10 innings when Dominican’s Haley Cheek scored on a throwing error in the top of the 10th inning to break a 3-3 tie.
BYUH scored seven runs in the first four innings in the second-game win. Chelsie Childs Lambert went the distance in the win.
Point Loma shuts out Hawaii Hilo
Nathan Bennett allowed three hits over six shutout innings as Point Loma Nazarene (14-5) defeated Hawaii Hilo (3-8) in baseball 5-0 in Hilo on Friday.
The Sea Lions broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning and broke the game open with three runs in the ninth. Leadoff hitter AJ Derr set the tone with a game-high three hits. Eric Vega took the loss, allowing two runs in 6 2/3 innings.
>> The Hawaii Pacific baseball team (14-5) scored seven runs in the first four innings on the way to an 8-4 victory over Azusa Pacific (7-11) at Hans L’Orange Park on Friday. Eight different Sharks recorded at least one hit, led by Tanner Tokunaga’s three hits. Cougars starter Jonny Reid was tagged with the loss, giving up 11 hits and seven runs over 51⁄3 innings.
Henry wins in Tahiti
Maui native Kaimana Henry beat Honolulu’s Fin McGill in the surfing finals of the Rangiroa Open Pro in Tahiti.
Henry’s final score of 13.30 surpassed McGill’s 8.25.
