Hawaiian Airlines, the most punctual carrier in the U.S. for the last 12 years in a row, started 2016 in a familiar spot.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 91.7 percent of Hawaiian flights were on time in January. An airline is considered “on time” by the DOT if it arrives within 14 minutes of its scheduled arrival time.
Alaska Airlines (87 percent) and Delta Air Lines (85.2 percent) made up the top three positions, the DOT said Monday. The average on-time performance of the 12 reporting carriers was 81.3 percent.
U.S.-based airlines are required to report their data if they have at least 1 percent of total domestic scheduled-service passenger revenue.
In 2015 Hawaiian posted the No. 1 ranking in nine of 12 months and averaged an 88.4 percent on-time performance to exceed the industry average of 79.9 percent.
For January Hawaiian also ranked first in fewest flight cancellations with 0.1 percent, representing four cancellations out of 6,279 flights.
In other categories, Hawaiian ranked third for the fewest mishandled-baggage reports with 2.14 per 1,000 passengers, and was seventh for fewest consumer complaints with 0.92 per 100,000 passengers.
