Maui County says the Hana Landfill will close early at 1 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday and the Lanai Landfill will close at 1 p.m. Saturday due to lack of staff.
Swimmer aiding others at Napili himself rescued
A Maui firefighter and a lifeguard rescued a swimmer who got in trouble Sunday while trying to help other people at Napili Bay.
At about 2 p.m. emergency crews responded to a report of a swimmer in distress.
Firefighters saw a man who was caught in a riptide and in need of assistance, and a firefighter swam out to the 50-year-old man and helped him until a lifeguard arrived on a Jet Ski and transported both of them to shore, fire officials said. The swimmer was brought in, and no medical attention was needed.
The swimmer said he had gone into the ocean to assist a group of swimmers who appeared to be in distress and got into trouble himself, fire officials said.
The other swimmers were able to make it to shore on their own.
Hiker, 74, airlifted after slip south of Honolua Bay
A 74-year-old female visitor was transported to a hospital Sunday after suffering various injuries when she slipped at a shoreline south of Honolua Bay, Maui firefighters said Monday.
The Fire Department helicopter airlifted the woman to a nearby parking lot, where medics assisted and took her in stable condition to a hospital.
Maui firefighters said rescuers responded at 10:19 a.m. Sunday to a report of a hiker in distress.
