A local family-owned food industry distribution company will be sold to a mainland-based competitor after 70 years in business.
Edsung Foodservice Co. has agreed to sell its assets to New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc., according to an announcement by C&S on Thursday.
A purchase price was not disclosed. The sale is expected to close late next month.
C&S said that following the acquisition it will consolidate Edsung, which was founded in 1946 by Sungdai Choi and specializes in bakery and restaurant supplies, into C&S division Hansen Distribution Group.
C&S did not say how Edsung employees will be affected by the sale. A C&S representative did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
Edsung CEO Mike Choi could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Rick Cohen, C&S chairman and CEO, said in a statement that his company is committed to maintaining Edsung’s “service with aloha” motto, and welcomed Edsung employees and customers into the C&S family.
“Edsung and the Choi family have maintained a very loyal customer base with their high-service business model and strong customer partnerships,” Cohen said in a statement.
C&S added that its acquisition will produce operational efficiency, continued growth opportunities and increased purchasing power and product breadth.
Edsung describes itself online as a broad-line food-service distributor that specializes in bakery, cake decorating and restaurant supplies for Hawaii. The company in 2014 acquired Paradise Traders, a local natural-food distributor specializing in dried fruits, organic items, chocolate, confectionery, coconut and peanut products.
