All appears ready for the opening of Las Vegas’ next big thing: The Park at New York-New York on April 4. The outdoor dining and entertainment district is being touted for its eco-friendly attributes and its Mojave Desert-inspired design that includes 200 transported mature trees, 3,000 ground covers, two water walls and “monumental shade structures.”
One component of The Park that hasn’t gotten much mention is its cool factor. During sweltering summer days, The Park will have a lower temperature due to the foliage and its heat-mitigating design. How much cooler remains to be seen.
New venue: The T-Mobile Arena will debut April 6, with a concert headlined by the Killers. The 20,000-seat arena is expected to host between 100 and 120 events per year.
Disappearing acts: Two mainstream magic shows closed last week. “New Illusions” closed at the Tropicana when the show’s star, Jan Rouven, was arrested on charges of possessing child pornography. Less than a week later, “Dirk Arthur: Wild Magic” closed without warning at Westgate Las Vegas, but he’ll return this summer.
Betting bargain: From now through the championship game of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the sports books at South Point, Rampart, Cannery and Eastside Cannery are offering -105 betting. This means you have to bet only $105 to win $100, as opposed to the standard $110/$100 arrangement at all other sports books.
Question: What happened to the boxing match that was supposed to run this month at the D? Has the series been canceled?
Answer: Not the series, just the most recent scheduled show, due to suspicions that Zab Judah, one of the main event participants, had submitted faulty information about his eligibility. Concerns from the Nevada Athletic Commission prompted the D to cancel; future shows in the “Knockout Night at the D” series are expected to be staged as planned.
