A 34-year-old Waikiki man was arrested by the FBI on Monday morning on a charge of obtaining credit cards in the names of more than 40 people whose identities he allegedly stole, resulting in credit charges amounting to about $100,000.
Steven Zubler was arrested at his apartment on Ala Moana Boulevard and appeared in federal court before Magistrate Judge Richard Puglisi. He was charged with credit card fraud.
In a criminal complaint, the FBI said Zubler moved to Hawaii in 2011 and a year later began buying personal informal from overseas individuals associated with hacking and selling of personal information.
Using that information, Zubler applied for credit cards and used the U.S. Postal Service to forward the credit cards to several mailboxes he controlled on Oahu, according to the FBI.
Zubler then used the credit cards to buy groceries and clothing, eat at restaurants and purchase precious metals and gift cards that he later resold, the FBI said.
If convicted, Zubler faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.
