Speed cited in fatal crash of motorcycle
Speed was a factor in a crash that killed a motorcyclist Wednesday morning in Pukalani, Maui police said.
Police identified the motorcyclist as Javin Leal, 26, of Makawao.
Leal was riding a 2004 Yamaha YZF-R1 motorcycle about 5:30 a.m. when he collided with a Lexus SUV that was making a left turn from Old Haleakala Highway onto Haleakala Highway, police said. Leal was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene.
The driver of the SUV, a 69-year-old Pukalani man, was wearing his seat belt and sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the scene and released.
Police said Leal was wearing a helmet.
Head of statue at Maui school is shattered
WAILUKU >> Authorities have opened a criminal property damage investigation after a statue of Father William Chaminade outside a Maui school was found beheaded after Easter.
Officials at St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School say a teacher discovered the head of the statue shattered on Monday.
Officials are not sure whether the damage was caused by vandals or a 3.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the island early Monday.
The damage to the 83-year-old statue has been estimated at $750.
The Catholic Online website says Blessed William Joseph Chaminade was a French Roman Catholic who survived persecution during the French Revolution. He founded the Society of Mary, which has had a large influence on St. Anthony school.
