The Chaminade softball team lost both games of its doubleheader against Concordia University on Wednesday in Irvine, Calif. Scores were 7-0 and 4-1.
In the first game, Chaminade fell behind early after Concordia’s Charlotte Foster hit a three-run homer in the first. Concordia pitcher Grayson Harvey then shut down the Silversword offense, striking out 14 in a complete game no-hitter. Concordia also hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and plated two more runs in the sixth.
In the second game, Chaminade again fell behind early, trailing 2-0 after two innings. The Silverswords finally got on the board in the third, plating a run on Amber Manuel’s RBI single. But Chaminade could get no closer, and Concordia picked up insurance runs in the fifth and sixth for the final margin of victory.
Concordia improved to 29-8 on the season, 11-5 in the PacWest. Chaminade drops to 8-24, 4-18 in the PacWest. Chaminade will now travel to Turlock, California to participate in the 2016 Tournament of Champions. They open play Friday against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Simon Fraser.
Dixie State hands UH Hilo pair of losses
The University of Hawaii at Hilo softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader with Dixie State on Wednesday in St. George, Utah. Scores were 9-0 and 7-6.
In the first game, the Vulcans were only able to muster one hit against the Red Storm in the loss. Meanwhile, Dixie State blew the game open in the third inning, posting seven runs, including a grand slam by Josey Hartman.
UH Hilo looked to have turned it around in the second game. After Victoria Garcia’s two-run single and Cristina Mejivar’s three-run home run in the sixth, the Vulcans held a 6-1 lead.
But Dixie State rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to pull within 6-5. The Red Storm (27-7, 15-3 PacWest) then walked off in the seventh with two more runs.
Up next for UH Hilo (22-13, 14-8 PacWest) is the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.
