Five members of the University of Hawaii swimming and diving teams received top honors from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Aimee Harrison, a senior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, took Female Diver of the Year honors for the fourth consecutive year. She placed 13th in the 1-meter at the NCAA Championship.
Amund Gismervik, a junior from Stavanger, Norway, won his third consecutive Male Diver of the Year honor. He placed 10th in the platform and 12th in the 3-meter at the NCAA Championship.
Franziska Weidner, a sophomore from Nuremberg, Germany, was named conference Female Swimmer of the Year. She was MPSF champion in the 200 individual medley, 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle, and also swam on the winning 800 freestyle relay.
Hawaii’s Mike Brown and Anita Rossing were named MPSF Diving Co-Coaches of the Year.
3 surfers from Hawaii make quarterfinals
Hawaii’s Alessa Quizon and Tatiana Weston-Webb advanced to the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach on Thursday at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.
Quizon defeated South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag 15.67 to 14.97 in their fourth-round heat, while Weston-Webb beat Australia’s Bronte Macaulay 16.93 to 11.10.
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel lost to Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore 15.87 to 15.66.
Fellow local surfer Carissa Moore had already qualified for the quarterfinals.
