HPU takes road doubleheader
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team swept a road doubleheader against Holy Names University by scores of 4-3 and 11-4, improving to 21-11 this season and 13-9 in PacWest conference play.
The Sharks were led by strong pitching performances in Game 1. Starter Kyle Detwiler pitched 71⁄3 innings, giving up three runs over five hits to improve to 5-0 on the season. Closer Brandon Bonilla pitched the remaining 12⁄3 innings for his ninth save of the season. Bonilla has not allowed an earned run in 14 innings and has struck out 21 this season. Josh Hammer took the loss for the Hawks after surrendering a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning on the mound.
The Sharks erupted for 14 hits in game two as Nolan Barraza had a game-high three hits and two runs for HPU.
The Hawks dropped to 5-26 and 3-15 in PacWest play after the twin bill.
HPU softball swept on the road
The Hawaii Pacific softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader in day one of the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., losing 7-2 to Stanislaus State and 6-3 to Chico State.
Stanislaus State took a 7-0 lead in the fifth inning and held the Sharks to five hits for the game. Kylie Ragsdale earned the win for the Warriors, scattering four hits over five innings pitched, striking out two and walking one. HPU starter Paige Crawford took the loss, surrendering seven runs and seven hits over 42⁄3 innings pitched.
The Sharks were doomed by a five-run third inning by Chico State in game two and committed five errors. The Sharks are 13-19 overall.

Billi Derleth tossed a two-hit shutout in game two, striking out two Otters and walking four.
Sonoma State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning as Seawolves starter Amanda Llerena went the distance with seven strikeouts, two walks and seven hits. The Vulcans are 23-14.
