Maryknoll junior right-hander Matt Dunaway held Kamehameha to two hits and the Spartans earned their second win of the ILH season by knocking off the Warriors 3-0.
Dunaway struck out four, walked three and was backed up by flawless defense in the complete-game victory at Hans L’Orange Field and the Spartans (2-10) snapped Kamehameha’s three-game winning streak. The Warriors began the day tied for first place.
“It’s rewarding them for not giving up, keeping the faith and basically they just kept going,” Maryknoll coach Randy Yamashiro said.
Maryknoll did all of its scoring in the top of the sixth with the aid of four walks. Dunaway drew a leadoff walk and Kaliko Thomas laid down a bunt and reached base on a throwing error. After a walk loaded the bases, Dreydon Yamauchi and Kyle Abe both walked to force in Maryknoll’s first two runs.
After a double play, Jarin Kobashigawa grounded a single through the middle to drive in Yamauchi.
Dunaway retired nine straight before Kamehameha loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the seventh and he punctuated the shutout with a called third strike.
“Kamehameha’s a good team. We just executed when we needed to,” Dunaway said.
