Big Island police have charged a 30-year-old Hilo man with the March 30 theft of a tractor- trailer from a Makaala Street business, police said.
The suspect, Soloman Kepano, was charged Friday with first- and fourth-degree theft, third-degree criminal property damage, four counts of second-degree reckless endangering, five counts of accidents involving damage to a vehicle or property, and two counts of accidents involving damage to an unattended vehicle or property.
According to police, witnesses saw the tractor-trailer run through a closed gate, strike a vehicle, run another vehicle off the road on Pilipaa Street and strike and sever a utility pole. The tractor-trailer continued on, eventually veering off the road and striking a residence.
Witnesses saw Kepano walking away from the scene and detained him until police arrived.
Kepano’s bail was set at $9,100.
Blaze destroys home in Hilo that was empty
A fire destroyed an unoccupied home in Hilo on Monday, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.
Twenty-one firefighters were called to a home on Mililani Street at 10:05 a.m. The fire was brought under control at 10:40 a.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No one was injured. A damage estimate was not available.
