Saying he saw “a great opportunity to step right in” at the University of Hawaii, guard Leland Green became the Rainbow Warriors’ first men’s basketball signee of the period Thursday.
The regular National Letter of Intent signing period began Wednesday.
Green, a 6-foot, 2-inch shooting guard from Redondo Union (Calif.) High, orally committed to UH last month. He said he signed the binding document Wednesday as part of signing day ceremonies at the high school, but was waiting to fax it to UH assistant coach Chris Acker.
With four players announcing they will not return to UH for the 2016-17 season, Green said the opportunity to play right away “was somewhat part of my decision.” He said, “I want to try and give the team everything I have next year.”
With the addition of Green, UH will have five scholarships remaining and the process could continue to the Aug. 1 conclusion of the signing period.
Guard Drew Buggs of Long Beach (Calif.) Poly and Australian point guard Matt Owies signed with UH in the November early signing period.
Green, a three-time Bay League MVP, averaged 14.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, two assists and 1.7 steals a game as a senior.
He said he chose UH over Southern Utah and Loyola of Chicago.
“Leland comes from a winning program, he is a strong physical guard who can play and guard multiple positions,” Hawaii coach Eran Ganot said in a statement.
