OK, procrastinators, we all got a three-day reprieve, but now it’s time to pay the piper, aka the Tax Man.
Monday is the federal deadline for 2015 taxes, pushed back from the April 15 norm due to a conflict with the legal holiday of Emancipation Day, which was observed Friday in Washington, D.C.
For those who still need more time beyond today, file Form 4868 for a six-month extension. That’ll waive any failure-to-file penalties — but not any tax payment owed the IRS; that payment, or estimated payment, still has an April 18 deadline and will accrue interest penalty for being overdue.
On April 20 cometh the tax deadline for Hawaii’s state taxes.

Given the high cost and limited options for interisland travelers, it’s encouraging to see Island Air restarting service to Kona, beginning June 14 with five daily round-trip flights. While smaller airlines have struggled against Hawaiian Airlines, we hope this one finds a way to thrive. After all, interisland travel is what stitches our communities together.
