Woman dies in accident on Kauai; 2 hurt in Oahu head-on crash

Hawaii’s roadways proved deadly over the weekend.

On Kauai a 22-year-old Kilauea man was killed Saturday in a two-vehicle crash on Kuhio Highway near Princeville Airport, police said.

The victim was heading south in a Nissan sedan when he apparently crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming Toyota sedan, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota, a 62-year-old Hanalei woman, was taken to Wilcox Hospital and was in stable condition, police said. The drivers were the only occupants of the vehicles.

Police closed Kuhio Highway in both directions for about four hours to investigate. The crash happened at about 6 p.m.

It was Kauai’s fourth traffic-related fatality this year.

Also on Saturday a 45-year-old female pedestrian died on Oahu after she was struck while trying to cross Kalanianaole Highway outside of a crosswalk near Huli Street in Waimanalo. Police said a 23-year-old Aiea man was driving east when he struck the woman at about 9:45 p.m.

The woman, a Waimanalo resident, was taken in critical condition by paramedics to a hospital and later died.

On Sunday a head-on vehicle collision on Kaukonahua Road in Wahiawa left a woman in her early 20s in critical condition and a 35-year-old man seriously injured.

The crash occurred near the S-turn on Kaukonahua Road at about 1 p.m., police said.

Paramedics treated the woman, who was not wearing a seat belt, and took her in critical condition to a hospital, an Emergency Medical Services report said.

The man, who was driving the oncoming car, was wearing a seat belt, and his air bag deployed. He was taken in serious condition by federal firefighters to a hospital.
