The University of Hawaii athletic department continues to trail most of its conference opponents in the percentage of subsidies it receives.
According to a survey of 2014-15 revenues by USA Today published Monday, UH ranks last in the nine-member Big West Conference and eighth in the 12-school Mountain West in subsidies.
UH plays football in the MWC and most of its other teams, including basketball and women’s volleyball, compete in the Big West.
According to the survey, just 12 of 231 Division I schools — all of them from Power Five conferences — did not receive some form of subsidy.
UH, according to the study, received $17,602,267 or 40.83 percent of its total revenue from subsidies that included state, institutional, student fee or other support.
The study comes as UH has been seeking legislative support for what athletic director David Matlin calls $5.2 million in expenses “unique” to the school due to its geography and other factors.
State Senate Bill 83, which remains alive in the legislature, would, if passed, provide both UH Manoa and Hilo with appropriations to help underwrite travel costs.
