Kalawaia honored with weekly award
L.J. Kalawaia, a redshirt senior outfielder for North Carolina-Greensboro, was one of six players named as Collegiate Baseball’s national player of the week on Monday.
Kalawaia, a 2011 Saint Louis alumnus, was also named the Southern Conference player of the week after hitting .600 with 18 RBIs in five games played during the week.
Kalawaia has five RBIs in three of his past four games and finished 8-for-13 with a double, a triple, two homers, two stolen bases, five runs scored and 13 RBIs to help the Spartans win two of three in a series against Furman that ended Sunday.
Kalawaia has started 36 of 38 games for the Spartans (28-10, 7-2) and is hitting .408 (60-for-147) with five doubles, four triples, five homers and 49 RBIs. He has also stolen 17 bases in 22 attempts.
UNCG has an RPI of 39 and is second in the league behind Western Carolina heading into this weekend’s series against East Tennessee State.
Ma’a gets Freshman All-America nod
UCLA’s Micah Ma’a was named to the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Freshmen All-American Team on Monday.
The 2015 Punahou graduate helped guide the Bruins to the nation’s sixth-best attack percentage at .309 and was named national freshman of the week four times this season.
Ma’a was named first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation as a setter and also had double-digit kills in nine matches while ranking fourth in the nation with 0.51 aces per set.
He led the second-seeded Bruins to a four-set victory over Hawaii in the quarterfinals of the MPSF tournament on Saturday, tallying 21 assists, seven kills, six digs, three block assists and two aces to tie the school’s single-season aces record in the rally-scoring era.
AVCA NAIA grants Wong high honor
Graceland University senior DJ Wong, a 2012 graduate of Kohala High, was named to the AVCA NAIA All-America Team on Tuesday.
Wong helped the Yellowjackets finished 25-6 this season as the team’s starting libero after converting from outside hitter. He was twice named the AVCA national libero of the week and averaged 2.98 digs per set.
“I am so very happy for DJ to be honored with the title of All-American,” coach Mark Lau said in a press release. “This is something that acknowledges the level of discipline that he has to his craft, and how much he impacts our team, making us better every single day.”
Wong is the second Yellowjackets player ever to be named a first-team All-American.
Graceland (Iowa) will compete in the eight-team National Invitational Tournament beginning today.
