Man indicted in fatal Kalihi stabbing

A 27-year-old probation violator was indicted by an Oahu grand jury Tuesday on a charge of killing a 16-year-old Farrington High School football player and another charge of stabbing the teen’s older brother in the leg after an apparent argument.

Adrian J. Bringas is being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center unable to post bail of $500,000 after being charged with second-degree murder in the death of Wesley Ulugalu-Sula and second-degree assault of Ulugalu-Sula’s 18-year-old brother, Chippa.

Wesley Ulugalu-Sula was killed April 12, two days shy of his 17th birthday. Bringas is scheduled to be arraigned in Circuit Court on Monday.

In addition, Bringas was arrested for violating terms of his probation. Also, while in custody last week, he was arrested for violating terms of a protective order.

On March 29, Bringas had been granted a pass by a judge to leave OCCC to attend a drug rehabilitation program, but never returned, authorities said. Bringas was in prison because he had failed terms of his probation following a 2009 conviction for robbery.

Bringas has 24 criminal convictions dating to 2008, including three felonies, according to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center.

According to a police affidavit filed in Honolulu District Court, Bringas approached a group of juvenile males April 12 on Ahonui Street fronting a Kalihi public housing complex and attempted to sell them illegal drugs.

During an argument with the brothers, Bringas was seen pulling an object out of his backpack. Wesley Ulugalu-Sula then was stabbed once in the upper chest and Chippa Ulugalu-Sula in the upper right leg, according to the police statement.

Police said Bringas, who was also wounded, fled on foot but flagged down a police officer on Middle Street and was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center for treatment. The brothers also were taken to Queen’s, where Wesley Ulugalu-Sula died at 10:35 p.m. Chippa Ulugalu-Sula was treated for a stab wound and released.
