A 57-year-old visitor drowned over the weekend while snorkeling off Poipu, Kauai.
Police on Monday identified him as David Stewart of Washington, D.C.
Stewart was snorkeling when he ran into trouble in waters off Lawai Beach Resort at about 4:05 p.m. Saturday. Police spokeswoman Sarah Blane said there are no lifeguards in the area.
Bystanders performed CPR on Stewart until fire rescue arrived. Medics transported him to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Blane said Stewart traveled to Kauai with his family. It’s unclear whether anyone was in the water with him at the time.
The fatality marks Kauai’s second drowning so far this year compared with four drownings at the same time last year.
Police seek Hilo transit agency money thieves
Hawaii County police are looking for the suspect or suspects who took three 5-gallon buckets of cash and coins from the county Mass Transit Agency on Lanikaula Street over the weekend.
Police said someone broke into the building sometime Friday night or Saturday and took buckets belonging to the Hele-On Bus operations, along with paper bus passes.
Anyone with information about the theft or the people who might have the buckets of cash and coins is asked to call officer Jacob Obermiller at 961-2213 or the Police Department’s nonemergency line, 935-3311. Tipsters can also call the Hawaii island CrimeStoppers number, 961-3311.
