A Kauai man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of sexual assault and attempted sexual assault involving two young girls who belong to the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii Lihue Clubhouse, where he was a volunteer.
A Kauai grand jury Thursday returned two indictments against Eirik James Stevens. Lihue Deputy prosecuting attorney Keola Siu said there are two indictments because the alleged assaults involve different victims on two occasions. Each indictment was handled in a separate courtroom Tuesday.
Stevens, 49, appeared before Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe for arraignment on two counts of first-degree sexual assault involving a 7-year-old girl.
He also appeared Tuesday before Circuit Judge Randal Valenciano on the second indictment, two counts of attempted third-degree sexual assault involving an 8-year-old girl.
A trial date of Aug. 29 was scheduled on the allegations involving the younger girl, and Stevens is scheduled for trial on Aug. 1 on allegations involving the older girl.
Bail for each indictment is set at $500,000 after Siu argued that Stevens poses a danger to children. When initially charged, Stevens was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail. He remains in custody.
According to the indictments, on March 21 Stevens allegedly invited the 7-year-old girl into his apartment and sexually assaulted her. He allegedly attempted to sexually assault the 8-year-old girl sometime between Feb. 14 and March 21.
The victims are members of the Boys & Girls Club.
Stevens volunteered in gardening activities with the children in an after-school program at the Lihue clubhouse. in response to the allegations, the Boys & Girls Club has barred Stevens from volunteering.
