Dunn Muramaru has long considered his senior class in general to be a group of low-maintenance guys.
The Owls proved one more time that they churn out high performance, too. Alex Oley doubled in the tying run in the fifth inning, and Jacob Maekawa scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch as No. 1 Mid-Pacific rallied past No. 5 Punahou 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon to capture the ILH baseball championship.
Maekawa, who started the game at shortstop, pitched in relief of Ethan Fujikami and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh.
A crowded house at Damon Field saw Mid-Pacific (16-4) earn a first-round bye for next week’s Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I State Championships at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku.
“Honestly, it means a lot,” Oley said. “The ILH every year is anybody’s game. Just because you work hard doesn’t mean you’re entitled to anything.”
Punahou needed a win over MPI to capture the playoff title, and then another win over the Owls for the league crown. Instead, Mid-Pacific’s seniors came through once again.
“The kids came back from losing (against Punahou last week),” Muramaru said. “That was probably the worst game of the year. You don’t really see it from the seniors, but in their own way, they get the team together.”
Now Punahou, the playoff tourney runner-up, will meet regular-season runner-up Saint Louis on Thursday in a 6:30 p.m. matchup at Hans L’Orange Park. The winner will earn the ILH’s second and final state-tourney berth. Punahou’s record, 11-9, does little to reflect the way they’ve pushed the ILH’s top teams in recent weeks.
Punahou coach Keenan Sue expects his team to respond the way they have all season.
“We’ve come a long way and I’m really proud of our guys, but we aren’t done yet,” the second-year head coach said.
In the top of the fifth, Austin Horio lined a two-out single to center and Freeman walked. With a 2-0 count on Cabrera, Muramaru removed Fujikami and moved Maekawa from shortstop to the mound. The count was 3-2 on Cabrera when Maekawa threw a ball in the dirt that was quickly scooped up by the catcher, Kyle Layugan. Though Cabrera had walked, the runners had taken off on the pitch and Layugan threw a low ball off third base that hit the dirt. Horio scored from third on the miscue to give Punahou a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Zach Gushiken led off with a walk and was forced out on a sacrifice-bunt attempt by Hunter Hill, Maekawa singled to left, putting runners at second and first. Oley then came to the plate with a new plan.
“I was just trying to get my hands out,” said Oley, who was jammed and frozen by Evan Bisho’s curveballs earlier. “I got a curveball and just put the barrel on it.”
His double to the left-field corner plated Hill to tie the game at 2. That was the end of Bisho’s afternoon, and Riley Guieb took over. His wild pitch permitted courtesy runner Jared Fujiwara to score from third, and the Owls led 3-2. Guieb struck out Chase Wago and Ryne Yamashiro to end the inning.
Maekawa ran into trouble in the seventh. He hit pinch hitter Jerick Nomura with one out, then surrendered a single to pinch hitter Codey Kitagawa. With two outs, he walked Cabrera to load the bases. Using his sneaky side-arm action, got ahead in the count 1-2 against Noah Goss, who went after a high pitch and just missed hitting it square. His pop-up to backup shortstop Wyatt Young ended the game.
