A 22-year-old Ewa Beach woman arrested Sunday after her vehicle allegedly struck and killed a former Kamehameha Schools varsity football player in Nanakuli, has been released pending investigation.

Police arrested the woman about 9 p.m. about a half-mile from the crash site on Farrington Highway near Laumania Avenue for investigation of driving under the influence of an intoxicant and fleeing the scene of a fatal crash. She was released from custody overnight Monday, police said.

The crash killed Kaulana Werner, 19, of Nanakuli, who died of multiple blunt trauma, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said. His death was ruled an accident.

In 2015, after graduating from Kamehameha Schools, where he was a wide receiver on the varsity football team, he attended Sterling College in Kansas, where he played football and majored in business. He returned to Hawaii after one semester to help care for his mother because she was having health problems, a family member said.

Police said Werner was crossing Farrington Highway on foot in the makai direction near his home when he was hit by the vehicle driven by the woman as she headed toward town. Excessive speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, police said.
