Kapolei arrived at McKinley’s softball field early to have lunch and relax a bit before Friday’s OIA Division I semifinal game against top-ranked Campbell.
The Hurricanes converted that sense of ease into a quick start at the plate and weathered a white-knuckle finish to pull out a 5-4 win and earn a shot at the program’s first OIA title in more than a decade.
Kapolei pitcher Sadie Kapaku-You drove in the Hurricanes’ first two runs and held off the Sabers in a complete-game performance to hand Campbell its first loss of the season.
“I just really felt the kids had it inside of them,” Kapolei coach Tony Saffery said. “They had the right attitude coming here. … We came here early, they were out here dancing, listening to music and just staying loose.
“I was very happy they took that into the game. Just coming in more relaxed and just play the game instead of being too tense, too tight.”
Kapolei will face Mililani, a 6-0 winner over Pearl City in Friday’s second semifinal, for the OIA Division I title today at 7:20 p.m. at McKinley. Campbell will host Pearl City for third place at 3 p.m.
The Hurricanes are seeking the program’s first OIA title since winning back-to-back championships in 2004 and ’05.
They earned that opportunity by finally getting past Campbell after two close losses in the regular season. Campbell won the first meeting 4-2 on March 28 and pulled out a 4-3 win on April 21 during a 12-0 run through the OIA West season.
Campbell coach Michael Hermosura said the Sabers also won two meetings with Kapolei in preseason tournaments, but “the dice rolls sometimes different.”
“I think this is a good thing, better now than in the states,” Hermosura said. “Hopefully we can turn things around. Tonight we need to make adjustments as players and as coaches. It’s a learning lesson for everybody.”
Kapaku-You got the Sabers to roll over a few pitches in producing 14 ground-ball outs. She struck out two and walked one in the win.
“I knew if I gave my defense ground balls, they would make the play, and I was just trying to keep the ball low,” Kapaku-You said.
Kapolei opened the game with three straight hits and took the lead on Kapaku-You’s two-run single down the right-field line. Campbell answered with pitcher Elisa Favela’s RBI single in the bottom of the first.
Kapolei took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second on Makana Meyers’ sacrifice fly and Kapaku-You hung four zeroes across the board going into the sixth.
The Hurricanes bunched four hits in the top of the sixth and extended the lead on RBI singles by Holiday Ribac and Raina Mckean.
Campbell got both runs back in the bottom of the inning, with Caragh Morris drilling an RBI single into left field and Trinity Favela running out an infield single with two out to drive in Kiani Telles.
Kapaku-You took a 5-3 lead into the seventh and got the first two outs before Campbell catcher Jocelyn Alo launched a home run to center to cut Kapolei’s lead to 5-4.
Danielle Cervantes, who came in to relieve Favela in the sixth, kept the Sabers alive with a single in a rare plate appearance. But Kapaku-You got a groundout to shortstop Sala Pedebone to end the game.
“I knew Campbell was going to come out really hot in the seventh inning. They’re really good at clutching up,” Kapaku-You said. “But I knew my team would have my back and get the outs.”
Mililani 6, Pearl City 0
Merilas Rivera and Tristan Cozo drove in two runs each, pitcher Aubree Kim struck out nine in a complete-game performance and the two-time defending OIA champion Trojans joined Kapolei in tonight’s title game.
Pearl City reached the semifinal with back-to-back no-hitters in the first two rounds of the OIA tournament, but Rivera gave Mililani the lead with an RBI single in the Trojans’ two-run first inning. She delivered again in a four-run outburst in the fifth and Cozo later drilled a single down the third-base line to drive in the Trojans’ final two runs.
Kim held Pearl City to three hits in the shutout.
